Indian Institutes of Technology — The Indian Institutes of Technology are autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India. The post-graduate level program that awards M. In addition to B. Joint Seat Allocation Authority conducted the joint admission process for a total of 19 IITs, the member committee, headed by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, recommended the establishment of these institutions in various parts of India, with affiliated secondary institutions.
On 15 Septemberthe Parliament of India passed the Indian Institute of Technology Act, the location of these campuses was chosen to be scattered throughout India to prevent regional imbalance. This led to a campus at Guwahati under the Assam Accord in The University of Roorkee, Indias oldest engineering college, was conferred IIT status inover the past few years, there have been a number of developments toward establishing new IITs.
On 1 OctoberPrime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced plans to create more IITs by upgrading existing academic institutions that have the necessary promise and potential. Subsequent developments led to the formation of the S K Joshi Committee in November to guide the selection of the five institutions which would become the five new IITs.
Based on the recommendations of the Sarkar Committee, it was decided that further IITs should be spread throughout the country. When the government expressed its willingness to correct this imbalance,16 states demanded IITs. Since the S K Joshi Committee prescribed strict guidelines for institutions aspiring to be IITs, plans are also reported to open IITs outside India, though not enough progress has been made in this regard 2.
A high-power committee of Government of India recommended in establishment of four institutes of technology to set the direction for the development of technical education in the country.
Planning for the Institute at Mumbai began in and the first batch of students was admitted in Since its establishment in Powai, the institute has physically expanded to more than major buildings with a combined area of more than 2.
Currently IIT Bombay has a total of 14 academic departments, six centers, one school, over the last 53 years, around 39, engineers and scientists have graduated from the institute.100X4 Relay Final 48th INTER IIT Sports Meet IIT Roorkee 2012
The site chosen for the institute was Powai, eighteen miles from the city of Mumbai, one of the main objectives of establishing the Institute was to develop facilities for studies in a variety of specialised engineering and technological sciences. The need for establishing adequate facilities for studies and research was kept uppermost in mind in the founding years. The IIT Bombay campus is located at Powai, a suburb in north eastern Mumbai, the campus is divided into clusters of buildings.
The academic area comprises the main building, various departmental annexes. All department annexes are connected by a corridor named Infinite Corridor, beyond the Convocation Hall lie most of the hostels. There are a total of 16 hostels, of two hostels and a part of the newly constructed hostel are for female students. Due to its proximity to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the campus has significant green cover and is untouched by the pollution of the rest of the city.
The proximity of the campus to the park has also led to occasional sightings of panthers, Leopards. Sometimes they stray into the campus in chase of hunt, the institute has two swimming pools, football, hockey and cricket grounds, and tennis, basketball, squash and volleyball courts 3. Sport of athletics — Athletics is a collection of sporting events that involve competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking.
The most common types of competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running.
IITR SPORTS COUNCIL — IIT ROORKEE's Sports council
The results of racing events are decided by finishing position, while the jumps, the simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly competed sports in the world. Athletics is mostly an individual sport, with the exception of relay races and competitions which combine athletes performances for a team score, organized athletics are traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games from BCE.
The rules and format of the events in athletics were defined in Western Europe and North America in the 19th and early 20th century.
Most modern top level meetings are conducted by the International Association of Athletics Federations, the athletics meeting forms the backbone of the Summer Olympics. In the 19th century, the term acquired a more narrow definition in Europe.
This definition continues to be the most prominent one in the United Kingdom, furthermore, foreign words in many German and Roman languages which are related to the term athletics also have a similar meaning.
In much of North America, athletics is synonymous with sports in general, the word athletics is rarely used to refer to the sport of athletics in this region. Track and field is preferred, and is used in the United States and Canada to refer to most athletics events, including racewalking, Athletic contests in running, walking, jumping and throwing are among the oldest of all sports and their roots are prehistoric.
Athletics events were depicted in the Ancient Egyptian tombs in Saqqara, with illustrations of running at the Heb Sed festival, the Tailteann Games were an ancient Celtic festival in Ireland, founded around BCE, and the thirty-day meeting included running and stone-throwing among its sporting events.
The original and only event at the first Olympics in BCE was a running event known as the stadion. This later expanded to include throwing and jumping events within the ancient pentathlon, Athletics competitions also took place at other Panhellenic Games, which were founded later around BCE.
The Cotswold Olimpick Games, a festival which emerged in 17th century England. Badminton — Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net.
Although it may be played with teams, the most common forms of the game are singles and doubles. Badminton is often played as an outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach. Points are scored by striking the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within the opposing half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net, play ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor or if a fault has been called by the umpire, service judge, or the opposing side.
The shuttlecock is a feathered or plastic projectile which flies differently from the used in many other sports. In particular, the feathers create much higher drag, causing the shuttlecock to decelerate more rapidly, shuttlecocks also have a high top speed compared to the balls in other racquet sports. The game developed in British India from the game of battledore. European play came to be dominated by Denmark but the game has very popular in Asia.
Sincebadminton has been a Summer Olympic sport with five events, mens singles, womens singles, mens doubles, womens doubles, at high levels of play, the sport demands excellent fitness, players require aerobic stamina, agility, strength, speed, and precision. It is also a sport, requiring good motor coordination.
The name derives from the Duke of Beauforts Badminton House in Gloucestershire, as early asa London toy dealer named Isaac Spratt published a booklet titled Badminton Battledore—A New Game but unfortunately no copy has survived.
An article in The Cornhill Magazine describes badminton as battledore and shuttlecock played with sides, the game may have originally developed among expatriate officers in British India, where it was very popular by the s.
Early on, the game was known as Poona or Poonah after the garrison town of Pune, where it was particularly popular. Byreturning officers had started a club in Folkestone. Initially, the sport was played with sides ranging from 1—4 players, the shuttlecocks were coated with India rubber and, in outdoor play, sometimes weighted with lead.
Although the depth of the net was of no consequence, it was preferred that it should reach the ground, the sport was played under the Pune rules untilwhen the J. Basketball — Basketball is a non-contact team sport played on a rectangular court by two teams of five players each.
The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet high that is mounted to a backboard at each end of the court.
The game was invented in by Dr. James Naismith, a team can score a field goal by shooting the ball through the basket being defended by the opposition team during regular play. A field goal scores three points for the team if the player shoots from behind the three-point line. A team can also score via free throws, which are worth one point, the team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but additional time is mandated when the score is tied at the end of regulation.
The ball can be advanced on the court by passing it to a teammate and it is a violation to lift, or drag, ones pivot foot without dribbling the ball, to carry it, or to hold the ball with both hands then resume dribbling.
The game has many techniques for displaying skill—ball-handling, shooting, passing, dribbling, dunking, shot-blocking. The point guard directs the on court action of the team, implementing the coachs game plan, Basketball is one of the worlds most popular and widely viewed sports.
Outside North America, the top clubs from national leagues qualify to continental championships such as the Euroleague, the FIBA Basketball World Cup attracts the top national teams from around the world.
Inter IIT Sports Meet
Each continent hosts regional competitions for teams, like EuroBasket. He sought a vigorous indoor game to keep his students occupied, after rejecting other ideas as either too rough or poorly suited to walled-in gymnasiums, he wrote the basic rules and nailed a peach basket onto a foot elevated track.
Basketball was originally played with a soccer ball and these laces could cause bounce passes and dribbling to be unpredictable. Eventually a lace-free ball construction method was invented, and this change to the game was endorsed by Naismith, dribbling was not part of the original game except for the bounce pass to teammates.
Passing the ball was the means of ball movement. Dribbling was eventually introduced but limited by the shape of early balls. Dribbling only became a part of the game around the s 6. Cricket — Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a cricket field, at the centre of which is a rectangular yard-long pitch with a wicket at each end. One team bats, attempting to score as many runs as possible, each phase of play is called an innings.
After either ten batsmen have been dismissed or a number of overs have been completed, the innings ends. The winning team is the one that scores the most runs, including any extras gained, at the start of each game, two batsmen and eleven fielders enter the field of play. The striker takes guard on a crease drawn on the four feet in front of the wicket.
His role is to prevent the ball hitting the stumps by use of his bat. The other batsman, known as the non-striker, waits at the end of the pitch near the bowler. A dismissed batsman must leave the field, and a teammate replaces him, the bowlers objectives are to prevent the scoring of runs and to dismiss the batsman. An over is a set of six deliveries bowled by the same bowler, the next over is bowled from the other end of the pitch by a different bowler.
If a fielder retrieves the ball enough to put down the wicket with a batsman not having reached the crease at that end of the pitch. Adjudication is performed on the field by two umpires, the laws of cricket are maintained by the International Cricket Council and the Marylebone Cricket Club.
Traditionally cricketers play in all-white kit, but in limited overs cricket they wear club or team colours. In addition to the kit, some players wear protective gear to prevent injury caused by the ball.
Although crickets origins are uncertain, it is first recorded in south-east England in the 16th century and it spread globally with the expansion of the British Empire, leading to the first international matches in the midth century. ICC, the governing body, has over members. The sport is followed primarily in Australasia, Britain, the Indian subcontinent, southern Africa, womens cricket, which is organised and played separately, has also achieved international standard.
Similar is the case for badminton, which had temporary coaching from Chandan Pramanik, but were pretty much on their own for the most part. Another reason that contributed to the poor start that KGP received in most sports was the mindless journey that all athletes had to endure to reach KGP.
The table-tennis players had to even invest in their own rubbers and ply for the tournament, even though they were promised that the entire amount would be refunded. The question that needs to be asked is how the allocated funds are being used. Looking back at Shaurya, one can easily see that any team had to play a maximum of three-four matches to win the tournament, while in Inter-IIT it takes a minimum of six.
Another change that most current captains would like to see is the start of practice from the Spring semester itself. That coupled with some sort of a Holiday Inter-IIT camp during the Durga Puja break would serve not only to sharpen the acumen of our athletes, but would also increase the bonding of the contingent as a whole, something which was lacking in Roorkee. Motivation of players It is no secret that an Inter-IIT certificate in your curriculum vitae significantly increases chances of a Day 1 placement.
And nobody really has an issue with that. Another reason why some players may not be strongly motivated is the complete lack of incentives to perform well, apart from the love for the sport.
Kislaya Dubey, who has the distinction of representing Kharagpur in both Water Polo and badminton, feels the buzz in the campus is only about getting into the team and not what happens afterwards. He also points in the direction of dedicated efforts by sports councils of other IITs who maintain performance record of each and every Inter-IIT player and regularly publicize them.
Inter IIT Sports Meet
There is much prestige involved when it comes to Inter-IIT. It is hence only natural that the host IIT tries to maximize its chances of securing as high a position as possible in the General Championship. However some of the practices adopted by Roorkee were unethical at best, and downright ugly at worst.
For starters, Kharagpur was given practice slots at ungodly hours in sports where it was in the same group as Roorkee. Case in point would be table-tennis, where our players were supposed to practice at 6 am at 5 degrees Celsius. In badminton, the Roorkee players in their quarter-final match against Kharagpur girls could choose just about whenever to stop-start the match.
